washed concrete flooring

For the Bosart project in Genk, Glansbeton worked in multiple construction phases on washed concrete flooring. In the on-site photo you see a grey floor with fine, visible aggregates. The video shows the washing on site: the step that reveals the aggregate structure.

We carried out this work for Habenu-van de Kreeke ConstructionThe project correspondence shows how important coordination with the construction schedule was: after the first concrete order in December 2024, subsequent phases were planned in 2025. With such phased execution, the finishing across the different construction parts must align.

Our own site video shows how the top layer is washed away.

How does the floor get its visible grain?

With washed concrete, the top, thin mortar layer of the concrete is removed at the right moment. This exposes the stones in the mix at the surface. This gives the floor a texture you can see and feel. The video shows the washing in practice; the photo shows the surface after the aggregates have become visible.

The result depends on the chosen concrete composition, the size and colour of the stones, and the way the floor is finished. For Bosart, a grey appearance with fine aggregates was planned. It is useful to look at a real project image beforehand: other applications can have a much lighter colour and a different grain. On our page about washed concrete flooring provides more explanation about the possibilities.

The execution requires attention to timing and accessibility

With this finishing, the timing of the washing is important. The top layer must be workable, while the stones must be sufficiently embedded in the concrete. Accessibility of the work area also plays a role: the team must be able to treat the surface, edges and joints. The video footage shows the manual work with the water jet; the finishing does not happen automatically once the concrete is poured.

For a new outdoor floor, we therefore discuss not only the appearance. We also consider the shape of the terrain, access for concrete delivery, drainage and the expected use. A business environment may require different choices than a garden path or terrace. The visible aggregate determines the look, but the entire floor construction determines whether the pavement is suitable for the load.
