Living on the water
A concrete floor on a houseboat? At Tom Waes's, we installed residential concrete down to the lower deck.
Glansbeton installed the power-trowelled concrete floor for the living room, kitchen and bedrooms. A special place to work: the concrete was brought on board from the quay, after which our team finished the floor on site.

Take a look on board

In the video, you get a tour of the houseboat and see how the spaces together form a home. The round windows, the long lower deck, and the interior give this place a very distinctive character.

Preparing & delivery
From the quay to the lower deck
The installation started outside, with the ready-mix truck and the pump at the quay. Through the pump hose, the concrete reached the lower deck. In the site photos, you can see the opening downwards, the reinforcement and the pipes that were already in place.

Pouring & distributing
A floor takes shape, room by room.
Between the ship’s walls and under the round windows, the fresh concrete was placed and spread. The images show the execution as it was: pump hose, tools and our team in the middle of the work.

Polishing & finishing
The finishing makes the residential concrete
Tom Waes chose an anthracite concrete floor in his extended Kempenaar. After polishing, we also waxed. That treatment gave the surface a soft gloss.
Besides the later wax treatment, the fresh concrete also requires proper care. Read more about concrete curing.
After application, machine polishing followed. This way, the concrete itself became the visible floor finish. The long sightline through the boat nicely shows how the floor connects the different parts of the lower deck.

From the quay to inside the houseboat
On this houseboat, every workspace required a different approach. Outside, the equipment was on the quay. Inside, the pump hose went through the opening to the lower deck, between the existing ship walls and the prepared floor. The portholes also remind us that this is no ordinary home on solid ground.

Also for your home
A special floor starts with a good conversation.
You do not have to live on the water to choose residential concrete. Also in a new-build home or renovation, we consider how the floor fits the spaces, the substrate, and the execution.
