Brushed concrete for driveways, slopes and outdoor floors

Outdoor concrete · finish with texture

A driveway or garage ramp requires a different finish than a smooth residential floor. With brushed concrete we draw a fine, rough texture into the fresh concrete using a brush. This gives the hardened surface more grip and a distinctive linear pattern.

What is brushed concrete?

Brushed concrete is a concrete floor whose surface is brushed during finishing. The brush leaves small grooves in the top layer. The underlying floor remains a cast concrete slab; the texture is therefore not created by subsequently applying tiles or a loose covering.

Where a power-trowelled floor results in a smoother surface, we deliberately choose texture for a brushed finish. This makes the technique interesting for places that are regularly wet or where vehicles drive up a slope. How coarse the pattern becomes depends on the brush, the timing of finishing, and the condition of the concrete.

When to choose a brushed driveway or ramp?

Typical applications include driveways, ramps leading to a garage, loading docks, parking areas, courtyards, and access roads. For such floors, not only the colour and appearance matter, but especially how people and vehicles use the surface.

Grip starts with the complete design

A brushed texture can improve grip compared to a very smooth surface. However, it does not make a slope slip-free under all conditions. The slope angle, drainage, contamination, and possible ice formation also play a role. Therefore, we consider the finishing together with the intended use of the driveway.

We deliberately choose the direction of the grooves. On a slope, the driving direction is an important starting point. For a terrace or walkway, factors such as walking comfort, cleaning, and integration with the surroundings also play a role. A very coarse texture is not automatically the best choice for every outdoor floor.

How do we install brushed concrete?

1. Preparing substrate, levels and formwork

A good execution starts before the ready-mix truck arrives. The substrate must be suitable and sufficiently load-bearing. We coordinate the levels, the slope, the connections and the water drainage with each other. The formwork of the concrete floor defines the edges and keeps the fresh concrete in place.

The floor construction, any membrane, thickness, and reinforcement are determined by the design and the load. Reinforcement meshes are supported at the correct height. A driveway for passenger cars has different requirements than an area where heavy trucks turn.

2. Pouring and levelling concrete

The concrete is delivered and, where necessary, placed using a concrete pump. Afterwards, we distribute and compact the mixture in a manner suited to the chosen concrete composition. Using a screed or vibrating beam, we bring the surface to the agreed level. A brush cannot correct an incorrect slope or a poorly levelled floor afterwards.

3. Brushing at the right moment

The top layer must be sufficiently stiffened to achieve a uniform texture, yet remain workable. After the preparatory finishing, brushing follows. Brushing too early can open up the surface; brushing too late results in insufficient patterning. Therefore, we monitor the concrete on site instead of adhering strictly to a fixed number of hours after pouring.

4. Concrete curing and providing joints

After finishing, the young concrete must be protected against too rapid drying. Also read our explanation about concrete curing. Shrinkage and construction joints remain necessary according to the design. A cast outdoor floor has fewer loose parts than paving, but is therefore not completely jointless or free from cracking risk.

Brushed, polished or exposed aggregate concrete?

FinishingAppearance and considerations
Brushed concreteA deliberate linear pattern with a rough texture. Interesting for functional driveways and slopes.
Polished concreteA smoother finished surface. Carefully match the finishing to indoor or outdoor use.
Exposed aggregate concreteVisible stones give a different, more granular appearance. The chosen aggregate partly determines the colour and texture.

Are you mainly looking for a natural stone texture for your outdoor layout? Then take a look at exposed aggregate concrete for terrace and driveway. For indoor floors you can read more about residential concrete.

Price, colour and maintenance

The price of brushed concrete depends among other things on the surface area, accessibility, preparation, floor thickness, reinforcement, concrete delivery and edge finishing. A steep or difficult-to-access driveway requires a different approach than a flat, open parking area. Therefore, a price per square metre without those details is of little use.

A coloured finish is also negotiable. Keep in mind that concrete is a mineral material: weather conditions, application and drying can cause colour nuances. For a good choice, we review the colour together with the desired brushing pattern.

For maintenance, regularly remove sand, leaves and dirt. Pay attention to drainage channels and spots where water remains standing. Use a cleaning method that does not damage the surface layer; aggressive treatment can alter the appearance and texture.

Frequently asked questions

Is brushed concrete permeable to water?

A standard brushed concrete slab is not a water-permeable pavement. Water must be able to drain away via the designed slope and drainage. For infiltration, a different construction is needed; see for that permeable concrete.

Can a brushed driveway be installed in one day?

Pouring and finishing can be completed in one working day if the scale and preparation are appropriate. Preparatory work and the period before use are not automatically included. The schedule is determined per project.

When can I drive on the new driveway?

That depends on strength development, temperature, floor construction and loading. Follow the agreed commissioning period. The top appearing dry does not mean the floor is ready for a vehicle.
